Catoryctis, n.g.
Head smooth; ocelli absent; tongue well-developed. Antennae moderate, in male filiform or serrate, shortly ciliated (¼ – ½), basal joint moderate, without pecten. Labial palpi very long, recurved, second joint with appressed scales, terminal joint as long as second, slender, smooth, acute. Maxillary palpi very short, appressed to tongue. Thorax smooth. Abdomen moderate. Posterior tibiae with appressed scales. Forewings with vein 1 furcate towards base, 2 from 2/3, 3 from angle, 7 and 8 stalked, 7 to apex, or rarely 7 absent (coincident with 8), 11 from middle. Hindwings over 1, trapezoidal-ovate, 1b clothed with long hairs towards base, shortly fuscate [sic] at base, 3 and 4 from a point or short-stalked, 5 parallel, 6 and 7 approximated at base, 8 connected with cell at a point near base.
The species of this genus are probably all attached to Casuarina, and have the longitudinally striped colouration necessary for concealment among the slender twigs of that tree.

CATORYCTIS, Meyr.
Antennae of male filiform, simple; Meyrick describes .the antennae of male as shortly ciliated (¼ - ½), but I have always found a total absence of cilia. In the forewings vein 7 is absent (coincident in mediolinea and subparallela, present in all the other species.

Other references

[Mimoscopa, Meyrick, Tineidae] Nearly related to Tinea, of which it is probably an offshoot;but the single species has a peculiar facies, nearly resembling the genus Catoryctis in the Xyloryctidae; whether the resemblance has anything to do with mimicry, or is associated with a similar habitat, there is at present no evidence to show. (Meyrick, 1892).

The genus Catoryctis (pl. 28, fig. 39) contains species with longitudinally striped forewings; the larvae feed on she-oaks (Casuarina). (Tillyard, 1926).

Catoryctis Meyrick includes nine described species, mostly with longitudinal silvery white stripes on the fore wings. They are usually associated with Casuarina (Casuarinaceae), and the larvae of C. subparallela (Walk.) (Pl. 5.7) form tubular shelters between the branches. Their white stripes probably aid in concealing them amongst the Casuarina foliage. (Common, 1990).

Cat. eugramma, n. sp.
Both sexes 25-26mm. Head light shining ochreous, sides white. Palpi ochreous-whitish. Antennae white, annulated with fuscous. Thorax brownish-ochreous, with a white stripe on each side of back. Abdomen pale ochreous. Legs ochreous-whitish, anterior pair ochreous. Forewings elongate, costa strongly arched, apex tolerably pointed, hindmargin faintly sinuate, extremely oblique; 7 present; rather dark ochreous-brown; markings shining white; a moderate streak immediately beneath costa from near base to 3/6, sometimes cut posteriorly by one or two longitudinal veins; a moderate streak, anteriorly attenuated, from disc at 1/3 to apex; a slightly narrower streak from base along submedian fold to hind margin above anal angle, but posterior fourth reduced to two indistinct parallel lines; a slender somewhat irregular streak from inner margin near base to anal angle; a slender streak from inner margin at ¼, running near inner margin to beyond middle: cilia ochreous-brown, mixed with whitish, with a white· apical bar (imperfect). Hindwings fuscous, paler towards base, in male with a rather broad hind marginal band, narrowed towards apex, of somewhat raised brownish-ochreous scales; cilia fuscous-whitish.

The small Catoryctis eugramma is found in moist eucalypt forests from the Atherton Tableland to southern New South Wales. The larva bores in the branches of Casuarina (Casuarinaceae). The bold longitudinal lines are typical of moths that rest in grasses, or, in this case,  the long needle-like branches of Casuarina. (Zborowski and Edwards, 2007).

PHTHONERODES (?) LEUCOMERATA, n. sp.
Female, 17 mm. Head, palpi, antennae, thorax, abdomen, and legs whitish; segments of abdomen fuscous-reddish. Forewings oblong, costa strongly arched towards base; hindmargin obliquely rounded; pale-ochreous; a suffused reddish patch of scales above inner margin near base; some scattered fuscous scales mixed with white from base along inner margin to anal angle; an indistinct irregular line from one-fourth of costa to one-third of inner margin; a similar line from five-sixths costa to above anal angle, included space strongly irrorated with white, and all veins tending to be marked with black; cilia fuscous. Hindwings grey, paler towards base; cilia grey-whitish, with a dark basal line.
One specimen (at light), Parkside, S.A. In the absence of the male, it is impossible to refer this species with certainty to its genus.

Forewings with costa rounded, whitish-ochreous with fuscous bands on veins; a broad median snow-white band from base narrowing sharply to a point at f5/6; cilia ochreous. ♂ 14 mm. Head whitish-ochreous. Palpi ochreous, terminal joint tinted with fuscous. Antennae white annulated with fuscous. Thorax whitish-ochreous, with a faint fuscous line laterally and posteriorly. Abdomen light fuscous-ochreous. Forewings elongate, costa gently arched, apex obtuse, hindmargin oblique, rich chocolate-fuscous with ochreous-silvery lines; a slender attenuated streak immediately beneath costa from base to 2/5, a thin line immediately beneath this at 2/3 running obliquely to 2/3 costa, two short thin lines immediately beyond this and parallel, a short arrow-head line immediately beyond broadening in apical angle to apex, with a tendency to divide at apex, a moderately broad straight line from just before middle of wing to 1/3 hindmargin, with a tendency to divide before hindmargin, a narrower line immediately beneath and parallel to this imperfectly divided on hindmargin, a moderately broad streak from inner margin at base to anal angle, with a similar line parallel and close to inner margin: cilia light fuscous with base more or less ochreous. Hindwings light shining ochreous, with a fuscous cloudy suffusion at apical angle narrowing to a point opposite middle of hindmargin; cilia ochreous.

Antennae white, sharply annulated with dark fuscous. Thorax ochreous-brown, with three longitudinal white lines. Abdomen ochreous-whitish. Legs ochreous-whitish; anterior pair infuscated. Forewings moderate, costa gently arched, apex rounded, hindmargin obliquely rounded; ochreous-brown, with numerous fine white lines; costal edge fuscous at extreme base; a subcostal line from base to middle of costa; a median line from base, bifurcating at 1/5, upper limb reaching 2/5, lower limb along fold, parallel and equal to upper limb; an inner marginal line commencing at 1/5 and reaching margin just before anal angle; four streaks parallel to veins running to costa; a second short median line from middle of disc, ending in a white spot at 4/5; four fine short streaks parallel to hindmarginal veins; an irregular white spot close to inner-marginal line near its termination; cilia whitish, extremities brownish. Hindwings in male white with a sharply defined dark-grey patch at apex; in female grey, darker at apex; cilia white.

Catoryctis perichalca, n. sp.
♀ 25-27 mm. Head, palpi, and thorax silvery-white, second joint of palpi fuscous, patagiae light ochreous-fuscous. Antennae white, annulated with fuscous above. Abdomen ochreous-fuscous, segmental margins dull whitish. Legs ochreous, anterior and middle pair suffused with whitish. Forewings elongate, costa rather strongly arched, termen obliquely rounded; bright ochreous-fuscous, with silvery-white markings; a narrow subcostal streak from near base to middle, touching costa on anterior end and becoming attenuated posteriorly; two very fine short streaks, somewhat obscure, between posterior extremity of subcostal streak and costa at four-fifths, both touching costa; a broad, clear, longitudinal streak, from base to just above middle of termen, posterior half somewhat attenuated; a similar streak from base along dorsum to one-sixth, thence continued above dorsum to termen above tornus, attenuated at base; cilia ochreous-fuscous, becoming grey-whitish around tornus, and silvery-white below apex, caused by the median line being continued through cilia. Hindwings fuscous; cilia fuscous-whitish.

Female, 26 mm. Head, thorax, and antennae fuscous, collar white, palpi fuscous, second joint externally whitish. Legs whitish. Abdomen fuscous, segmental margins dull ferruginous. Forewings elongate, costa rather strongly arched, apex somewhat pointed, hindmargin very oblique; 7 present; slaty-fuscous; markings white outlined with blackish; a moderate streak along costa from base to beyond two-thirds posteriorly strongly attenuated and leaving extreme costal edge fuscous towards base; a moderate streak from base direct to middle of hindmargin, attenuated at ends; a similar streak immediately beneath, from base to anal angle attenuated posteriorly; three rather short tine lines towards hindmargin, between last two streaks; a slender line from three-fourths of disc to costa, before apex; a similar but shorter streak beneath to apex; some obscure whitish scales along inner margin indicating an unexpressed streak; cilia fuscous. Hindwings grey, posteriorly fuscous-tinged; cilia whitish with a dark-fuscous basal line.
Intermediate between “subnexella,” Walk., and “tricrena,” Meyr. One specimen (at light) in November, at Parkside, S.A.

♂. 32 mm. Head whitish-ochreous. Palpi ochreous-whitish, second joint slightly sprinkled with fuscous. Antennae slender, simple. Thorax light brownish mixed with whitish. Abdomen pale ochreous. Forewings elongate, cost a moderately arched, apex rounded, termen rounded, rather strongly oblique; 7 to apex; light fuscous suffused with grey and irregularly sprinkled with whitish, with a few blackish scales; an undefined transverse bar of white irroration beneath middle of disc; veins towards lower half of termen more distinctly suffused with white : cilia grey mixed with whitish. Hindwings whitish-fuscous, more whitish towards base, apex and termen suffused with fuscous; cilia light greyish with darker subbasal line, tips whitish.

Foem. Argenteo-alba; abdomen pallide cervinum; alae anticae aeneo-cervinae, strigis pallidioribus, striga subcostali lanceolata, vitta media strigaque postica intersecta argenteis; posticae cinereo-aeneae, fimbria albida .
Female. Silvery white. Abdomen pale fawn-colour above. Wings moderately broad, slightly rounded at the tips. Fore wings aeneous fawn-colour, with paler streaks between the veins;. a silvery lanceolate subcostal streak extending along half the length from the base; a silvery middle stripe, which is very obliquely intersected at one third of the length and extends to the tip of the wing; a silvery streak very near the interior border, and extending along half the length from near the base of the latter. Hind wings cinereous-aeneous; fringe whitish. Length of the body 5 lines [10.6mm]; of the wings, 14 lines [29.6mm].

Both sexes 16-23mm. Head iridescent-whitish, back of crown ochreous. Palpi with second joint light fuscous mixed with whitish, more whitish beneath, terminal joint fuscous with an indistinct whitish lateral line. Antennae white, annulated with dark fuscous. Thorax fuscous, sometimes mixed with whitish on back, patagia iridescent towards apex. Abdomen whitish-ochreous. Legs whitish, anterior pair fuscous. Forewings elongate, costa moderately arched, apex round-pointed, hind mar gin straight, oblique; 7 present; fuscous, more or less ochreous-tinged; a white attenuated streak immediately beneath costa, from base to middle; all veins tending to be marked posteriorly with whitish streaks, but generally very indistinct; a moderate straight silvery-white longitudinal median streak from base to apex, interrupted by a very oblique line of ground-colour before middle, lower edge emitting one or two short very oblique teeth on veins posteriorly; sometimes a small darker spot on lower margin of this at it 2/3; a slender whitish longitudinal streak from inner margin at ¼ to beyond middle, often almost entirely obsolete: cilia fuscous, mixed with paler, with a white basal spot at apex. Hindwings fuscous or grey, becoming lighter and sometimes ochreous-tinged towards base; cilia whitish, with a light fuscous line.

Female. Silvery white. Palpi smooth, nearly twice longer than the breadth of the head; third joint setiform, shorter than the second. Antennae very slender. Thorax with a gilded stripe along each side. Legs short, stout, smooth. Wings elongate. Fore wings rounded at the tips, with seven gilded stripes; first stripe costal; second united to the fourth near the base; third united to the fourth at somewhat beyond half the length; fourth slightly forked near its tip; fifth slightly branched near its tip; sixth very short; seventh on the interior border; exterior border slightly convex, rather oblique. Hind wings pale cinereous, slightly gilded exteriorly; fringe whitish. Length of the body 4-5 lines [8.5 – 10.6mm]; of the wings 12-14 lines [25.4 – 29.6mm] .

Male. Silvery white. Palpi smooth, slender, slightly gilded, less than twice the length of the breadth of the head; third joint setiform, very little shorter than the second. Antennae smooth, slender. Thorax with three gilded stripes. Abdomen and hind wings very pale fawn-colour, the former extending rather beyond the latter; Legs smooth, rather stout; hind tibiae not fringed. Fore wings rather narrow, slightly rounded at the tips, with three gilded stripes; first stripe subcostal, emitting two very oblique streaks to the costa; a gilded streak extending along half the length from the base between the second stripe and the third, which is along the interior border; exterior border straight, · very oblique.

Male 17-21mm. Head light shining ochreous, sides white. Palpi pale ochreous, terminal joint and apex of second whitish. Antennae white, annulated with fuscous. Thorax white, anterior margin and a lateral stripe pale ochreous. Abdomen whitish-ochreous. Legs light ochreous, anterior pair fuscous. Forewings elongate, costa moderately arched, apex round-pointed, hindmargin faintly sinuate, oblique; 7 absent; brownish-ochreous, golden-tinged; a slender silvery-white attenuated streak immediately beneath costa from near base to beyond middle; a whitish line from beneath this at 1/3 to costa at ¾, and another from beneath this beyond middle to costa before apex; a moderately broad straight entire silvery-white longitudinal median streak from base to apex; a similar narrower parallel streak from inner margin at 1/3 to hind margin below middle : cilia greyish-ochreous, darker on costa, cut by ill-defined white bars on longitudinal streaks, on anal angle wholly white. Hindwings whitish-ochreous, anal angle yellow-ochreous; cilia whitish-ochreous.
Sydney, New South Wales; several specimens taken and bred, in November and February. Larva feeding between joined twigs of Casuarina suberosa, in October.

The striped forewings of Catoryctis subparallela (Walk. ) (109, male 0.9 inch ) provide camouflage amongst the Casuarina foliage upon which the larvae feed. Common, 1963).

They are usually associated with Casuarina (Casuarinaceae), and the larvae of C. subparallela (Walk.) (Pl. 5.7) form tubular shelters between the branches. (Common, 1990).

Male 20-21mm. Head white. Palpi white, second joint light greyish-ochreous above towards base. Antennae fuscous, dotted with whitish, base white. Thorax white, anterior margin, a lateral stripe, and a narrow stripe on each side of back light fuscous. Abdomen whitish. Legs whitish, anterior pair fuscous. Forewings elongate, costa moderately arched, apex tolerably pointed, hind margin faintly sinuate, oblique; 7 present; fuscous; a white streak from base immediately beneath costa, reaching costa at ¼, and continued along it to 2/3, finely attenuated; one or two short whitish lines between veins towards costa posteriorly; a moderate straight white longitudinal median streak from base to apex, posterior fourth cut by a longitudinal fuscous line; three short white longitudinal lines between veins towards hindmargin; an ill-defined narrow whitish straight longitudinal streak from base of inner margin direct to anal angle, posteriorly confluent with a fine whitish line along submedian fold: cilia whitish, mixed with fuscous (imperfect). Hindwings grey; cilia grey-whitish.

Catoryctis truncata, n. sp.
♂. 20 mm. Head ochreous-white; palpi ochreous-white, terminal joint diffused and sparingly dotted with fuscous; antennae dark fuscous; thorax ochreous; abdomen ochreous, with a band of blackish-fuscous at base of segments; legs fuscous. Forewings elongate, costa arched, hindmargin obliquely rounded, ochreous, with white bands and blackish fuscous lines and bands. Forewings with four longitudinal bands of ground colour, the first along costa, thins out towards apex and base, and is bounded by a subcostal silver-white line from base to beyond ½ costa; the second line is median and is suffused with silvery-white; the third line is immediately before the inner margin and the fourth is inner marginal, both are from near base of inner margin and thin out towards apex; the space between first and second lines is deep blackish-fuscous, and is divided by eight lines of ground colour, running obliquely outwards from median to costa, the apical ones gradually become shorter; the second space between the second and third bands is blackish-fuscous and is divided in hind marginal third by four ground colour longitudinal parallel lines: cilia dark fuscous. Hindwings light grey shaded with darker fuscous; veins darker; cilia greyish-fuscous, with a broad darker band near base.
May Orchard, Brisbane; one specimen at light.
Allied to C. subparallela, Meyr. (?), and C. nono-linea, Lucas.
